The Hin Keng Station in Hong Kong, serves as the pilot “Green Railway Station”, integrated environmentally conscious features into design, planning, construction, and operation. Key green and low carbon initiatives include natural lighting and cross-ventilation, green roof, the use of renewable energy, the installation of bird nest boxes to provide habitats for nearby birds, and the use of eco-brick planters made from spoil ballast to beautify the surroundings and support upcycling. The station has achieved an “Excellent” rating under the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) In-Use certification, making it the first railway station to receive this certification in the world. In the future, green and low-carbon designs will be incorporated into all new stations and new residential property development projects.
