Billion Opportunities Program, by Fortescue Metals – 2016 Shared Value Award

Highly commended, Shared value project by an organisation or collaboration

The Billion Opportunities Program commenced in 2011 and is an initiative to promote sustainable business opportunities for Aboriginal people. The initiative is primarily achieved by encouraging joint venture partnerships between experienced organisations and Aboriginal businesses.

Supported and led by the Fortescue Executive Team, the program is seeing Fortescue enhance the communities in which they operate, fighting Indigenous disparity by integrating Aboriginal business into their supply chain, helping the Aboriginal community, business and governments to turn away from the broken handout model to a hand-up model, and provide a flow-through effect of Aboriginal employment, capacity building, business ownership and economic development that can provide better opportunities for the next generation.

Fortescue Metals Group is a global leader in the iron ore industry, recognised for its culture, innovation and industry-leading development of world class infrastructure and mining assets in the Pilbara, Western Australia. Fortescue has a long term commitment to contributing to ending the disparity between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Australians and to improve the economic capacity of Aboriginal people and communities.
